My wife just sent me the enclosed email (even though we were sat in the same room at the time - be warned kids, this is what happens when computer geeks marry!). I thought it was worth sharing:

NOTE: Those easily offended by irreverent gallows-humour may want to skip this. You have been warned...

- Operation very expensive.
+ Cheaper than having kids, and better value.

- Household makeup expenditure gone up 1000-fold.
+ Wifey's 10-year-old hardly-used mascara was probably a health hazard anyway.

+ Style factor of household gone up 1000-fold.
- A stylish computer geek is just deeply wrong, and Does Not Compute.

- Transition deeply stressful for all concerned; at Wifey's contraceptive checkup, blood pressure was up 25/18.
+ At least the nurse who asked why Wifey looked stressed could no longer complain of a boring day at work.

- Awkward to tell elderly relatives, because most of them read the Daily Mail and think Hitler had redeeming features.
+ If they drop dead on the spot from shock, that's an inheritance come early and a whole load of nursing home fees saved.

- Morning leaving-the-house ritual now takes about three hours.
+ Wifey gets an extra three hours in bed.

+ Can now share clothes.
- Makes it much harder to sort the laundry.

+ New interest in ironing, and willingness to do it.
- Our ironing board's a death trap, so it was a good thing nobody used it ever before.

+ Always at least one person in the house who's made an effort to look good.
- Shows up Wifey for being scruffy.

- Stops to check makeup in every mirror.
+ Female friends find this an endless source of fascination, and will pass on beauty tips.

- Any mention of sex change while chatting on the Internet will attract Bible-thumping hate comments
+ The same people also believe that evolution's a lie and the moon landings were faked, so it's quite fun to wind them up.

- Mixing up pronouns can get you some funny looks.
+ New and interesting opportunities to escape boring conversations.

That's an interesting perspective on things. It sounds like, overall, she's taking this all quite well, which can only be a good thing.

Good luck to both of you.
